While some are trying to romanticize the Maidan, over 100 people died during the Maidan - even the Christmas tree was decorated as they did on the Maidan. They don't even hide that, - said the Chairman of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili.
According to him, the protest on Rustaveli Avenue has nothing to do with the Georgian protest culture.
"We have said all this in advance, long before. Back in the spring, we were saying, including to foreigners, that the opposition will not recognize the results of these elections, and all of this has been completed. We knew that Salome Zurabishvili would not schedule the session of the Parliament, she would not come to the session, we even made a change in the regulations for this. Everything is going according to the scenario that has been known to us for a long time. Of course, the result of this is known in advance. Just as they failed to take away people's choice in 2020, they will fail in 2024. Even with visuals, they implement the "Maidan" scenario in every possible way. We saw that even the Christmas tree was decorated as they did on the "Maidan". They don't even hide that and they don't even invent something new. The arrival of a newly married couple, decorating the Christmas tree with protest posters... one by one they follow the "Maidan" scenario, so much so that their steps in this regard are sold and publicly visible. They follow it step by step, as if they have a script in front of them, and from this script, they implement every day what happened to "Maidan" at the time. While some are trying to romanticize Maidan, I would like to remind everyone that more than 100 people died during Maidan. Ultimately, they want it. This is where these processes lead to, when they romanticize a political process that actually meant chaos. Rustaveli Avenue was turned into a center of violence and lawlessness. It has nothing to do with Georgian protest culture. We have seen a lot of things, the only parallel from our past is the putsch of the 90s - it's like that. The machine guns were replaced with machine guns, the scene and shots are the same, the parliament building was removed as a target, if in the 90s they shot cannons and machine guns, now they shoot machine guns and add them there, as if it's nothing and just for visual effects," Papuashvili said.
