We fully share the position that the parliamentary elections are illegitimate, the parliament is also illegitimate, and we fully support President Salome Zurabishvili, Lithuanian MEP Dainius Žalimas told journalists in Tbilisi.
“We discussed possible ways of engaging with civil society and Georgian democratic forces. We also fully share the position that the parliamentary elections were illegitimate, the parliament is also illegitimate, and we fully support President Salome Zurabishvili’s legal right to her position as the only legitimate institution representing the Georgian people. Of course, there are many issues to discuss, how to cooperate in the future, how to facilitate the decision-making on the inevitable new elections, which should be genuine, under real international supervision and should comply with all European standards of electoral principles,” said Dainius Žalimas.
The MEP also answered a question on the EU’s imposition of sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili.
“As you know, unfortunately, decision-making in the EU depends on unanimity and I think it will take time, but it is inevitable, especially after yesterday’s decision by the US government,” the MEP noted.
