The sixth president will inherit a very heavy legacy after Ms. Salome Zurabishvili essentially discredited the institution of the presidency, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili stated during today’s briefing.

Papuashvili emphasized that today's inauguration is historic for several reasons and wished Mikheil Kavelashvili success in carrying out his challenging mission.

"Today is not only an important day but a historic one. The inauguration of Georgia’s 6th president will take place today. It is historic for many reasons. This inauguration will be held in the historic chamber of the Georgian Parliament, where the country’s independence was declared, and where the first president of Georgia took the oath of office.

It is historic because, for the first time, a president elected by the electoral college will be inaugurated, fully enacting the constitutional reforms adopted in 2017.

It is also historic in the sense that the sixth president will have to shoulder a very heavy legacy. Ms. Salome Zurabishvili has essentially discredited the institution of the presidency, serving outsiders instead of the Georgian people. She turned the presidency into an institution of division rather than unity and used it as a tool for personal ambitions rather than advancing the interests of the people.

Following all this, Mikheil Kavelashvili will have the task of restoring the prestige and significance of this institution as defined in our Constitution," Papuashvili stated.
