"Levan Ioseliani is a worthless lackey of the regime, a disgrace that discredits the institution of the Public Defender! Whatever he says, his actions are the best tool for evaluation," said Saba Buadze, one of the leaders of the Strong Georgia coalition, during an appearance on PalitraNews’s program Day’s Newsroom.
According to Buadze, Ioseliani has not been seen at the scene of critical incidents during crises and instead makes shameful statements from his office. Buadze added that Ioseliani aligns himself with Georgian Dream as part of the institutions co-opted by Bidzina Ivanishvili.
"I personally have no questions for Levan Ioseliani. Since the restoration of our independence, Levan Ioseliani is the most disgraceful Public Defender we’ve ever had. He is a representative of this regime. Therefore, I truly have no questions for him. When he shows no interest in such high-profile cases, when he essentially remains silent on cases of torture, when he says that election rigging in this country is not his responsibility as a Public Defender, and when he claims to have seen no evidence and says he is not part of a monitoring mission—of course, all of this undermines trust in him. We have not seen him take any steps, symbolic or legal, that would reflect the harsh reality we face or be adequate in this context. We haven’t seen his interest in high-profile cases, nor any effective action from the Public Defender on issues of torture and inhumane treatment. Ultimately, the measure of his performance is both public opinion and the stance of his own staff. Levan Ioseliani is effectively a Public Defender who has been completely rejected by his own team. We saw the manifesto they boldly signed, showing that the real Public Defender’s Office today consists of those employees, not Levan Ioseliani," Buadze stated, adding, "It is clear that Ioseliani is a representative of this regime."
In addition to addressing Ioseliani's statements about cases involving detained protestors, Buadze commented on Bidzina Ivanishvili's new lawsuit against another Swiss bank.
"If anyone is blackmailing others, it’s Ivanishvili. He is blackmailing the Georgian people and our Western partners. His blackmail is aimed at solidifying his Russian-style authoritarian rule while trying to preserve his wealth in the West. This, of course, is contradictory because, in the Western financial system dominated by the dollar and under sanctions, Ivanishvili cannot hope to avoid repercussions," Buadze stated, adding, "Ivanishvili should not expect to keep both his wealth and the power he has usurped from the Georgian people."
