I call on EU leaders, member states and other international organisations to refrain from any actions that would legitimise the self-proclaimed Georgian Dream government, Lithuanian MEP Rasa Juknevičienė said during the debate on Georgia in the European Parliament.
“Brave Georgians have been protesting for more than 50 days against the theft of their European future, despite the brutality and violence of the Georgian Dream government. By the way, people on the streets are calling them the Kremlin Dream, the Russian Dream party. While Georgians are fighting for the European path, it is our duty to be clear in our support: first, the only true and legitimate representative of the Georgian people and the only recognized official is Salome Zurabishvili, second, Georgian Dream and the self-proclaimed one-party parliament are not legitimate authorities. I call on EU leaders, member states and other international organizations to refrain from all actions that would legitimize the self-proclaimed Georgian Dream authorities,” the MEP noted.
According to her, violence against people, political opposition and civil society is increasing in Georgia.
“One of the leaders of the opposition, Giorgi Gakharia, has been severely beaten, and free journalists have been attacked, including Mzia Amaglobeli, who has been sentenced to two months in prison. Europe must respond to this by imposing personal sanctions against those responsible, especially Bidzina Ivanishvili. The only way out of the crisis is new, independent, fair elections, without any delay," the MEP noted.
