Irakli Kobakhidze: There are too many traitors in Georgian politics and we need to confront them with specific legislative mechanisms - this is an anti-“Deep State” package

Unfortunately, there are too many traitors in Georgian politics and we need to confront them with specific legislative mechanisms, this is very important, - Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists.

Irakli Kobakhidze explained the decision of the Georgian Dream, according to which the article “treason” will be added to the Criminal Code.

“You know the history of the article on treason: in 2008, about a month before the start of the war, representatives of the previous government introduced a bill in the Georgian Parliament that envisaged removing the entry on treason. A month after the end of the war, the corresponding law was adopted. It is obvious that specific people were afraid of the article on treason. All this was directly related to the start of the war in 2008. It is fundamentally important for us to restore the relevant entry in the Georgian legislation in order to take even greater care of prevention, which is related to the commission of the crime of treason. Unfortunately, there are too many traitors in Georgian politics and we must confront them with specific legislative mechanisms, this is very important”, - stated Kobakhidze.

In addition, the Prime Minister also spoke about other draft laws initiated by the ruling team, which, among others, concern the media. According to Irakli Kobakhidze, the government made this decision to protect the country's national security.

“In fact, this is an anti-“Deep State” package. We need to protect the security of our country, including through legislation, and each draft law that has been initiated in the Georgian Parliament serves this purpose, including the Law on Transparency, where even greater clarity is needed in order to fully protect the national security of our country. The same applies to any other bill that has been initiated in the Georgian Parliament. We must protect our country from any threat, for this we have all the resources today and for this we must adopt the laws that have been initiated,” Kobakhidze said.

For information, by the decision of the Georgian Dream, the article “treason” will be added to the Criminal Code. According to the leader of the parliamentary majority, Mamuka Mdinaradze, the article had been removed from the Code by the National Movement.
