Nino Lomjaria: More than 50 people have been arrested since November, and 19 people were also arrested during the protests against the “Russian law” last year - procedural actions carried out in these cases are illegal

In addition to the fact that more than 50 people have been arrested and criminal proceedings have been initiated against them since November, we should remember that 19 people were arrested during the protests against the “Russian law” last year. As of today, all of them have been convicted, - Nino Lomjaria, Executive Director of the Georgian European Orbit, said at the briefing.

According to her, they constantly publish lists of judges and prosecutors who are involved in politically motivated justice.

“In addition to the fact that more than 50 people have been arrested and criminal proceedings have been initiated against them since November, we should remember that 19 people were arrested during the protests against the “Russian law” last year. As of today, all of them have been convicted. The cases we have studied reveal a consistent trend that the procedural actions in these cases were carried out in violation of the requirements of the law and are illegal. The issues of search and seizure and examination are particularly problematic.

One of the convicted individuals was pardoned by President Salome Zurabishvili. It should be noted that in the case of Giorgi Okmelashvili and other defendants, the judge and the prosecutor’s office coordinated to delay their cases and extend the time for considering the case in order to reach a guilty verdict after Zurabishvili’s presidential term would expire, in order to avoid a presidential pardon for them. This confirms the political motivation of the prosecutor’s office and the court in this case.

The judge who considered the merits of the case is Giorgi Gelashvili," Lomjaria noted.
