Teona Akubardia: The Georgian Dream fears British sanctions more than American ones, which is related to the hysteria against the United Kingdom and the crying about the grant, saying 'Oh no, if an NGO receives a grant and observes the elections, the country will collapse'

The phrase "I am Georgian, therefore I am European" was concluded by Ivanishvili, including the fact that Ivanishvili's parliamentary members will no longer be in PACE.

"European values" were such a fraud we have already seen – Papuashvili’s propagandist letter, based on the principle of "the East is the enemy," shows that they intend to shift the blame onto the Council of Europe with propaganda methods. This was stated by one of the leaders of the "For Georgia" party, Teona Akubardia, in PalitraNews' "Daily Newsroom" program.

As Akubardia points out, whatever the Council of Europe wants, it is Ivanishvili's regime that has shown the desire. The conditions that were set as preconditions – the release of prisoners, holding elections, and so on – were all rejected by Bidzina Ivanishvili.

"It is very significant that they do not represent the Georgian Parliament; they represent Ivanishvili’s Parliament. Ivanishvili’s parliamentary members will no longer be in PACE. They want to continue beating citizens, inhumane treatment, election falsification, all actions that oppose the principles of the Council of Europe. The phrase: 'I am Georgian, therefore I am European,' which was the message of our civilizational choice, was concluded by Ivanishvili, including this action. 'European values' was a fraud that we have already seen. The fulfillment of the 'European values' false promise occurs not only by halting the EU integration process but also by the fact that Ivanishvili’s Parliament will not have representatives in PACE. Whatever the Council of Europe desires, Ivanishvili’s regime has shown the desire. The conditions that were set as preconditions – the release of prisoners, holding elections, and so on – Ivanishvili has refused all of it. Papuashvili’s propagandist letter, based on the 'East is the enemy' principle, shows that they intend to shift the blame onto the Council of Europe through propaganda methods," Akubardia stated.

Additionally, she evaluated the statements made by representatives of the ruling party regarding the fact that the United Kingdom announced a grant competition in connection with the local government elections planned for October 2025. According to Theona Akubardia, "The Georgian Dream fears British sanctions more than American ones, which is exactly why there is hysteria, crying about grants, and low-quality disinformation campaigns against the United Kingdom."

"This is not related to the issue of grants. It is connected to Ivanishvili's regime's fear of British sanctions, which began with judges. The UK, like the USA, was a strategic partner. It played the most significant role in the country's territorial integrity and peaceful conflict resolution. With one swipe, the result of Ivanishvili’s actions was the disappearance of that partnership. You remember, sanctions came from the UK, followed by US sanctions. They fear these sanctions more than the American ones. This is connected to hysteria, low-quality disinformation campaigns against the United Kingdom, crying about grants, and the fear that if an NGO receives $100,000 in a grant and observes the elections, the country will collapse and there will be a violation of sovereignty. They are protecting Ivanishvili’s sovereignty, not Georgia’s," Akubardia pointed out.

She also discussed the recent personnel changes, particularly the appointment of Sulkhan Tamazashvili as the head of the Adjara government, who is on the list of those sanctioned by the West. According to Theona Akubardia, the fact that police officers are holding high positions in the regions indicates repression.

"Police chiefs who have been involved in inhumane treatment of citizens, including those who are sanctioned, are now filling positions in the regions that are aimed at maintaining power. No one has explained the case of Rizhvadze, what was the reason for his replacement. Of course, Tornike Rizhvadze was removed. No one leaves voluntarily. When the tendency is for policemen to go to the regions to high positions, it is a sign of authoritarianism and the kind of repression that Ivanishvili’s regime is planning to continue. If you look at the latest results, the ongoing protests in the Adjara region, you will see that Ivanishvili couldn’t break the protests either in Tbilisi or in Adjara. The reality is that Adjara, Batumi is critical and firmly defends constitutional achievements. They need additional reinforcement of authoritarianism in October," Akubardia emphasized.

Regarding the changes in Irakli Kobakhidze’s cabinet, the politician pointed out that up until now, "none of Ivanishvili’s prime ministers had the luxury of appointing the head of the State Security Service himself."

"There are two facts. First: none of Ivanishvili’s prime ministers had the luxury of appointing the head of the State Security Service, bringing in his own person, which is happening under Okhanashvili’s circumstances, and this is connected to Kobakhidze. The policy of balance, especially the appointment of law enforcement with his own people, is changing under Kobakhidze. Liluashvili had relations with the USA, which is no longer a partner because Ivanishvili decided so. I remember Liluashvili’s phrase about Kobakhidze. Do you remember when Varhey called Kobakhidze, and later Kobakhidze complained twice, saying he had been threatened with death, which Liluashvili mocked – there was no serious reason for an investigation. I don’t know if Liluashvili’s dismissal from the State Security Service is related to Bachiadze’s departure from Georgia or to power concentration, but with this logic, Gomealur should also be dismissed, as border security is also in his hands. I don’t know what Ivanishvili’s plan is in terms of the 'royal court' games. I know the situation will worsen even more, especially in the security sector," Akubardia said.

As for the decision made by the Central Election Commission (CEC), according to which restrictions were imposed on individuals allowed to stay in the polling stations on election day, Akubardia’s assessment is that this indicates "they intend to hold the elections through manipulation, which is far from democratic principles."

"Why should an observer not be allowed to verify someone’s identity? This means they intend to hold the elections through manipulation, which is far from democratic principles. When Putin holds elections, he knows in advance what percentage he will get. That’s what they want here too. Authoritarianism didn’t even fully form in Russia within a year. They intend to speed up all this. I haven’t seen an answer on why observers shouldn’t be allowed to verify identity," Akubardia concluded.
