Salome Zurabishvili: I want to address judges, public servants, everyone involved in the repressions: you still have a chance to come to your senses, because not only could sanctions be imposed on you, but you will also be morally accountable before society

I want to address everyone: judges, public servants who are involved in these repressions in various ways – you still have a chance to come to your senses and not be participants, not engage in this type of cooperation with the regime, because not only could these sanctions apply to you as well, but you will also be morally responsible before us, the society, for this – this is what Georgia's fifth president, Salome Zurabishvili stated during a briefing, commenting on the sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom on four Georgian officials.

She also noted that the sanctions by the UK have caused “a great stir” within “Georgian Dream.”

"I want to talk about the sanctions imposed by the UK, which have caused great concern within ‘Georgian Dream.’ The reason is that the UK is the country where many high-ranking officials have stored a significant portion of their assets. Therefore, the UK's active stance on sanctions is indeed very alarming for them. We also know that recently, Ivanishvili moved his assets, amounting to half a billion dollars, from the British offshore islands, including paintings and so on. This shows how important the decisions of the United Kingdom are, and even more so, the fact that these decisions are now targeting high-ranking officials, judges, prosecutors, and investigators, which is very significant. These are the individuals directly involved and responsible for the implementation of repressions."

She personally addressed those involved in the repressions: "I want to tell them – you still have a chance to come to your senses and not be participants, not enter into such cooperation with the regime, because not only could these sanctions apply to you as well, but you will also be morally responsible before society for this. From our side, from the ‘resistance platform,’ there is no desire for revenge in the future, as we have seen enough of retribution in this country, and we still see it today. This moral responsibility, when tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, or later you will have to look society in the eyes, is very difficult to bear."

"Once again, read the ‘Georgian Charter.’ It does not provide for any measures of retribution. It provides for the abolition of all Russian laws, all these repressive laws that have been adopted and are being adopted every day. After that, there will be work on the judiciary, because this country, in the end, deserves a truly just court," Salome Zurabishvili concluded.

For the record, the UK government sanctioned four individuals under the global human rights sanctions regime. According to the UK government, this package of sanctions targets Georgian officials responsible for serious human rights violations, in accordance with the 2020 Global Human Rights Sanctions Regulation.

Sanctions were imposed on General Prosecutor Giorgi Gabrichidze, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Shalva Bediashvili, Deputy Director of the Special Tasks Department Mirza Kezevadz, and the Head of the Special Investigative Service, Carlo Kachitadze. The sanctions include asset freezes, disqualification sanctions, and travel bans.
