In Georgia, since May 2024, 342 cases of violations of the rights of media representatives have been recorded, - reads a research report conducted by the Center for Media, Information and Social Research.
According to the report, in the past year, 112 cases of physical violence against media representatives have been recorded, 13 media representatives were illegally detained on various grounds, and journalists were prohibited from filming 77 times.
The Center for Media, Information and Social Research monitors the media environment throughout Georgia, studies the working conditions of journalists, and records incidents of violations of their rights.
As a result of the study, from May 2024 to May 2025, the following types and contents of cases were recorded:
342 cases of violations of the rights of media representatives were recorded (including: physical assault, illegal detention, prohibition of filming, denial of entry to the building of a public institution, fines, verbal and physical abuse, etc.) of which: on the day of the October parliamentary elections - 67 incidents; since November 28 during the pro-European protests - 169 incidents;
In the last year, 112 cases of physical violence against media representatives were recorded, of which: on the day of the October parliamentary elections - 10 incidents; since the day of the pro-European protests - 85 incidents;
Journalists were prohibited from filming 77 times during the year, of which: on the day of the October parliamentary elections - 46 incidents; since the pro-European protests – 22 incidents;
In the last year, 13 media representatives were illegally detained on various grounds, of which Mzia Amaglobeli is still in prison: during the pro-European protests – 11 media representatives were detained;
During the coverage of the pro-European protests, 34 cases of journalists were fined for blocking the road. (Most of the fines have been appealed, a small part of the fines were revoked, the majority are in the process of being processed, one journalist paid the fine);
From November 28, 2024 to the present, during the pro-European protests, 193 media representatives have become targets of various types of repression,” reads the report.
