The Special Penitentiary Service has issued a statement regarding the death of 46-year-old Ioseb Gorgadze at the Vivamedi Clinic.
As noted in the statement, as a result of the intensive investigative actions carried out, the fact of a fight or violence with the prisoner is not confirmed.
“The Special Penitentiary Service responds to the information disseminated by various media outlets regarding the death of the accused I. G.
The Special Penitentiary Service expresses its condolences to the family members of the prisoner and condemns the manipulation of the fact of the prisoner’s death, which is another example of the use of a human tragedy for political purposes by certain media outlets.
We would like to clarify to the public once again that the accused I.G. was placed in Penitentiary Institution No. 8 in compliance with the requirements of the legislation. From the day of his placement in the institution, the accused was under the supervision of medical personnel. Upon his placement, he underwent an initial medical examination and appropriate tests.
At the same time, we emphasize that the accused I.G. or his human rights defender have not filed any complaints regarding the violation of the defendant's rights during the entire period of his stay in the institution.
As is known to the public, on January 23, 2025, the health condition of the defendant I.G. deteriorated. The institution administration immediately called the 112 emergency medical team, which transferred the defendant to a multi-profile medical institution of the civil sector. The defendant I.G. was under constant supervision of the medical staff of the Critical Care Department of the medical institution, but died on May 4, 2025.
The Ministry of Justice and the Special Penitentiary Service were in active communication with the defendant's family and the Public Defender's Office.
In order to inform the public, we once again announce that the relevant unit of the Ministry of Justice immediately launched an investigation into the above-mentioned fact and intensive investigative actions were underway. It is noteworthy that the fact of a fight or violence is not confirmed within the framework of the ongoing investigation.
Currently, the Special Investigation Service is also involved in the investigative actions. The public will be informed about the results after the investigation is completed.
