Unfortunately, today the relationship between Georgia and Brussels is a hostage of the political context that has developed in our region and has many contributing factors – as soon as this context is removed, the relationship between Georgia, Brussels, and various EU member states will be freed from this captivity, – stated the Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili in Budapest, speaking to journalists.

According to Papuashvili, there are two incorrect approaches that certain political groups in Europe have toward Georgia.

“On one hand, we see the heavy burden the war in Ukraine has placed on the European Union. Some political groups in Europe had harmful expectations toward Georgia — that it would engage in a policy of escalation, even though unlike them, we are not protected by NATO nor under the umbrella of EU economic solidarity.

On the other hand, there are certain political groups in Europe that are protecting our former authoritarian ruler, Mikheil Saakashvili, and are trying not only to free him from his lawful punishment but also to bring his political force back to power.

These two misguided approaches by certain political groups in Europe — once they are removed, the relationship between Georgia, Brussels, and the EU member states will immediately be freed from this captivity,” – said Shalva Papuashvili.
