The International Democrat Union (IDU) has adopted a resolution concerning Georgia.

The resolution states that the October 26, 2024 parliamentary elections were held with significant violations, after which the country fell into a deep political crisis.

"Following the October 26, 2024 parliamentary elections marred by significant violations and the declaration by Georgia’s illegitimate government that it is suspending the process of integration into the European Union, Georgia has plunged into a full-scale constitutional, political, and human rights crisis;

Because peaceful protests are being suppressed by state-organized terror;

Because Georgia’s one-party ‘parliament’ created an ‘investigative commission’ in order to weaponize legal mechanisms to persecute democratic forces, particularly the United National Movement;

Because Judge Mikheil Jinjuolia applied the principle of cumulative sentencing to impose a new 12.5-year prison sentence on Mikheil Saakashvili, who has been a political prisoner for more than three years;

Because several countries have imposed bilateral sanctions on Georgian officials; and the Council of Europe has suspended parts of the EU-Georgia visa liberalization agreement,” — the resolution states.

The IDU also expresses solidarity with the Georgian people and calls on the Georgian Dream party to set a concrete date for new parliamentary elections.

The International Democrat Union:

Reaffirms its solidarity with the Georgian people in their pursuit of legitimate democratic rights, a European future, and the fight against Russia’s hybrid war;

Condemns the actions of the Georgian Dream party, its continued slide into authoritarianism, and its alignment with Russia’s orbit, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners;

Urges Georgian Dream to immediately halt all repressive legislation and end the use of terror against its own citizens, civil society organizations, independent media, and political opponents;

Calls for all perpetrators involved in the use of excessive force and brutality against peaceful demonstrators to be held accountable under the law;

Demands that Georgian Dream set a specific date for new parliamentary elections in which state institutions, including the Central Election Commission, function without political interference;

Calls on democratic governments to adopt clear policies based on two principles:

(a) reduce the regime’s financial lifelines by requiring financial institutions to cease cooperation with the illegitimate government until new elections are held;

(b) impose sanctions on the ruling elite responsible for democratic backsliding, electoral fraud, human rights violations, and persecution of political opponents;

Urges democratic governments to impose coordinated sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, his family, companies, and support networks, and to freeze all of his assets;

Calls on democratic governments to take measures to disconnect Ivanishvili’s Cartu Bank from SWIFT and Visa/MasterCard networks, and impose sectoral sanctions on businesses that support the regime, especially those involved in copper mining and non-ferrous metals.

It is noteworthy that the IDU forum is taking place in Brussels and is being attended by United National Movement representatives, including International Secretary Zurab Chiaberashvili and Head of the Department of International Relations Irakli Kavsadze.

"The International Democrat Union Summit adopted a very important resolution on Georgia. The summit is attended by leaders from around the world. The resolution expresses unequivocal support for our society and for political prisoners fighting against the regime. It expresses support for Mikheil Saakashvili, stating that he is Putin’s prisoner and demanding his release. Most importantly, it acknowledges that Georgian Dream has established a dictatorship in the country. The resolution calls on the international community to make them pay a price for that — specifically, by imposing sanctions.

They have betrayed Georgia’s European future. Therefore, they must be held accountable — this is the view of the vast majority of leaders here. The United National Movement continues its fight both inside the country and abroad so that the voice of the Georgian people is heard everywhere — be it Brussels, Washington, or any other capital,” — said Irakli Kavsadze.
