"It is clear that Ivanishvili is struggling with personnel issues, and a 'clan' feud is underway, a battle in the oligarch’s court," - this is how the Deputy Secretary General of the "Unity National Movement," Irakli Pavlenishvili, assessed the resignation of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Vakhtang Gomelauri.
At the same time, as he told journalists, Vakhtang Gomelauri’s name is associated with many serious crimes.
"We have seen unprecedented crackdowns in Georgian history, an epic of inhumane treatment and torture, when our fellow citizens were brutalized on Rustaveli Avenue. Therefore, this very grave crime will always be part of Mr. Gomelauri’s 'background.' As for personnel changes or 'purges' at the oligarch’s court, it doesn’t matter—what matters is what decision Ivanishvili makes, and who will carry out those orders is of no fundamental significance to anyone. However, it is obvious that Ivanishvili is struggling with personnel issues, and a 'clan' feud and battle in the oligarch’s court are underway," Pavlenishvili said.
According to him, Vakhtang Gomelauri’s name is "not associated with the prevention of an assault, but with the torture and inhumane treatment of innocent, peaceful students."
"Who will be the executor of Ivanishvili’s orders—what name they have—absolutely doesn’t matter, especially since instructions for punitive repressive measures will be given to the Minister of Internal Affairs," Pavlenishvili said.
For your information, Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri resigned today. As Gomelauri explained, he stepped down of his own volition, which "will allow him to spend more time with his family—his wife, children, and newly-born grandchild."
Gomelauri noted that this was not an easy decision for him to make, but despite stepping down, he remains loyal to "Georgian Dream."
Gela Geladze will replace Vakhtang Gomelauri as Minister of Internal Affairs. Geladze was introduced in this new role by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
Until now, Gela Geladze served as Deputy Head of the State Security Service. Before that, he was Deputy Minister of Education and later Deputy Minister of Defense.
