The National Statistics Office of Georgia reports that, based on preliminary data, as of November 14, 2024, Georgia’s population totaled 3,914,000 people, with 2,078,000 (53 percent) being women and 1,836,000 (47 percent) being men.
As stated in the information disseminated by “Sakstat,” the proportion of women is relatively higher in Tbilisi (56 percent) and Kutaisi (55 percent), while it is relatively lower in the municipalities of Mtskheta (49 percent), Kharagauli (49 percent), and Sagarejo (49 percent).
“According to the results of the population census, as of November 14, 2024, 2,423,000 people (62 percent) live in urban settlements, while 1,491,000 people (38 percent) reside in rural areas. By region, apart from Tbilisi, the proportion of the population living in urban settlements is high in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara (66 percent), driven by the large population of Batumi, while it is relatively low in the regions of Mtskheta-Mtianeti (20 percent), Kakheti (21 percent), and Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti (24 percent),” the information states.
Furthermore, according to “Geostat,” based on the 2024 population census data, 34 percent of the population lives in Tbilisi. In terms of population size, the Imereti and Kvemo Kartli regions rank second and third, accounting for 12.9 percent and 11.2 percent of the population, respectively.
In addition, “Geostat” provides information on the methodology of the population census.
“The 2024 Population and Agricultural Census of Georgia was conducted from November 14 to December 31, 2024. The census covered the entire territory of the country, except for the occupied territories. In accordance with international methodology, the census included all Georgian citizens permanently residing in the country, as well as foreign nationals and stateless persons present on the country’s territory. The reference moment for the population count (the critical moment of the census) was set at midnight between November 13 and 14, based on which facts were recorded. Within the scope of the census, data were collected electronically using modern technologies. The process was carried out in two stages: the first stage (November 14–23, 2024) utilized the self-registration method (CAWI), while the second stage (November 29–December 31) employed the computer-assisted personal interview method (CAPI). Due to high public interest, the self-registration option was additionally extended throughout December.
Additionally, considering that field operations could be complicated in some high-mountain and hard-to-reach settlements due to potential weather deterioration in November–December, the population census in the municipalities of Mestia, Kazbegi, Lentekhi, parts of Akhmeta (Omalo administrative unit), and Dusheti (Gudamakari, Magaroskari, Ukanapshavi, Kvesheti, Shatili, and Khevsureti administrative units, as well as villages within the Pasanauri administrative unit) was conducted in September 2024.
The publication of the census results is planned in two stages: preliminary aggregated results will be available on June 25, 2025, covering population numbers by regions and municipalities, disaggregated by gender and urban-rural settlements. Detailed (final) results of the census will be published in June 2026, including household living conditions, type of residence, year of building construction, area and number of rooms, types of household amenities; demographic and social characteristics of the population; citizenship and ethnicity, religion, education level, marital status, internal migration and immigration, employment and economic activity, health status; land area used by households, structure of agricultural land, structure of land occupied by annual crops and perennial plantations, number of fruit trees, citrus trees, and grapevines, total number of livestock and poultry, and number of bee colonies,” the information states.
