Levan Sanikidze: Israel must take decisive measures regarding “Georgian Dream”; it, along with other states, must pass a verdict on this government

If “Lelo” and Gakharia’s party participate in the elections, Bidzina Ivanishvili will hold a “praiseworthy” election, won’t falsify a single vote, and will defeat these two parties with zero effort. Joining a pseudo-battle is nonsense – a much firmer form of resistance is boycott, – said Levan Sanikidze, one of the leaders of the party “Unity – National Movement,” during Palitra News’ program “Day’s Newsroom.”

The opposition politician believes that these two parties are competing for second place and the status of the main opposition party.

“As for what’s written in [Khazaradze’s] letter – first of all, no one is pressuring them. The word ‘bullying’ used by a politician is unacceptable to me. What does bullying mean?! Has anyone dared to personally insult them, call them traitors, or echoed Georgian Dream’s propaganda? Their political position is not being criticized – it’s simply being called by its proper name.

‘We can’t hand over the country without a fight,’ they say. Should we hand it over through a pseudo fight?! If these two parties participate, Bidzina Ivanishvili will hold model elections, won’t falsify a single vote, beat them easily, and gain full legitimacy. He won’t even need to falsify anything. Joining a fake fight is foolish. A much stronger form of confrontation is a boycott, and it requires far more sacrifice than participating in these elections,” Sanikidze said.

He also stated that the best scenario would be for “Lelo” not to persist in its mistake.

“When the main opposition parties are not taking part, and public sentiment reflects that, and [their leaders] are sitting in prison, yet they’re still pushing forward – is that our problem or theirs?! In my view, these people are blinded by the prospect of taking second place and the desire to become the main opposition force.

As for Gakharia – he’s free, but he’s not even in the country, and from what I see, he might not even return,” he added.

Sanikidze also responded to the OSCE Secretary General’s recent statement that “it is unfair to the people who voted for them if the Georgian opposition, holding more than 40% of parliament, does not use that mandate.” He said the Secretary General’s stance is “an extremely exceptional position within the West.”

"The majority of our Western partners believe that the country should be governed by a coalition-based, pro-Western opposition government.”

Sanikidze further remarked that while American presidents and secretaries of state used to visit Georgia every six months, now the Foreign Ministry is preoccupied with “posting toothy selfies with deputy foreign ministers of island nations.”

“I am certain that we’ll have further communication with representatives of opposition parties soon. But the OSCE Secretary General’s stance is an extremely rare one in the West, and in my opinion, counts as an exceptional statement. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pay attention to it. I believe we should provide further explanations from our side, and it’s necessary to meet with him.

Did you see who Maka Bochorishvili is shaking hands with and what kind of photos they post?! This used to be a country visited by U.S. presidents and secretaries of state every six months, and now the Foreign Ministry is busy posting staged photos with deputy foreign ministers of tiny island states. Is that normal?! That’s why the majority of our Western partners believe that respecting the will of the Georgian people doesn’t mean waiting for Bidzina to write down who should enter parliament. It means recognizing that we won more than 76 mandates and that this country should be governed by a coalition-based, pro-Western opposition government.

That’s the main injustice – the reason over 500 people have suffered serious health damage in this country, and more than 60 people remain political prisoners.”

As for other issues, the opposition politician also commented on the statement made by the Israeli Embassy, which said: “We were concerned to learn that Georgia’s Deputy Foreign Minister attended a solidarity event at the Iranian Embassy – this is morally wrong.” According to Sanikidze, Israel should take decisive action regarding Georgian Dream.

“In my view, we, as pro-Western parties, should engage in further discussions with the Israeli Embassy. We’ve been saying for a long time that when a country is formally led by a Prime Minister who attended a significant ceremony in Iran – where slogans like ‘Death to America, death to Israel’ were being chanted – then nothing should come as a surprise. What surprises me is that Georgian Dream representatives have been received in Israel several times.

That’s why, in my opinion, Israel should take decisive measures regarding Georgian Dream. We will have further communication on this matter. Other states must also pass judgment on this government.

Today, Iran is ruled by a terrorist regime, and they [Georgian Dream] are showing solidarity with them. Then, logically, they should be more active at the Israeli Embassy too. But when Irakli Kobakhidze hears such statements and doesn’t condemn chants like ‘Death to America, death to Israel,’ then truly, nothing should surprise anyone,” – Sanikidze concluded.
