"What the public witnessed in the practically empty chamber of the European Parliament is shameful – Ms. Rasa was speaking to herself," said Davit Matikashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues, in response to yesterday’s debate in the European Parliament regarding Georgia.
According to him, "The resolution draft presented there received significant criticism from fellow MEPs and, at the same time, support for the Georgian people and the government they elected."
"The content of the text contained such absurd narratives, so detached from reality, and a clear desire to present lies as truth to the public, that the draft resolution couldn’t withstand criticism right there in the chamber."
"We are talking about a convicted individual, who has been charged with numerous crimes not only by Georgian courts but also by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg – I am referring to Mikheil Saakashvili. These people are trying to portray Saakashvili as a beacon of democracy to the public, when it is absolutely clear and simple to understand that there is no political persecution in Georgia. All those who are labeled as political prisoners have, in fact, entered prison by their own decisions and actions. Salome Zurabishvili, who is politically completely worn out and cannot be protected by any normative act to still be presented as a legitimate president in any form."
"Ms. Rasa keeps writing lie after lie about all of this and repeats them to herself in an empty hall. Does this have any value? These lies have neither legal nor political weight. This resolution, filled with lies, will be of no use for the purpose it was intended – to pressure and impose force on the Georgian people. The Georgian people do not yield to blackmail. This was made clear to Rasa and her supporters by their own colleagues in the European Parliament," Matikashvili stated.
