Mikheil Saakashvili: The US-Azerbaijan-Armenia agreement opens a new transit corridor bypassing Georgia, Iran and Russia - the iron curtain descends on the Red Bridge and we fall into the abyss, together with Moscow and Tehran

Ivanishvili destroyed Georgian democracy, isolated Georgia from its main allies, and now, because of all this, we are losing our transit hub function, - reads a letter from the third president, Mikheil Saakashvili, which has been posted on his Facebook page.

According to him, Georgia is losing its transit hub function, which is the result of severing ties with the West and dismantling democratic institutions.

Saakashvili notes that the US-Azerbaijan-Armenia agreement, according to which the US will lease the Zangezur corridor for 100 years, opens a new transit route from Europe to China - bypassing Georgia, Iran and Russia.

“The most serious geopolitical catastrophe for Georgia. Georgia’s prosperity during my time was based on its main source – the transit function, which we first gained during Shevardnadze’s time and deepened during my time, tourism and our status as a “beacon of world democracy”, which made us particularly attractive for investments.

We were also strengthened by the extensive international ties established during my time and the start of rapid Euro-Atlantic integration. These four factors were the guarantee of our security, and it was precisely to protect our transit function and especially our democratic system that Bush sent the 6th Fleet in 2008.

Ivanishvili destroyed Georgian democracy, isolated Georgia from its main allies, and now, because of all this, we are losing our transit hub function.

The signing of the US-Azerbaijan-Armenia international agreement, under which America will lease the Zangezur Corridor for 100 years, opens a new transit corridor from Europe to China, this time bypassing Georgia, Iran, and Russia.

Yes, it is with Iran and Russia that we are facing complete geopolitical isolation. This means that the Iron Curtain is falling on the Red Bridge and we are falling into the abyss, together with Moscow and Tehran,” Saakashvili writes.

According to him, against the background of these processes, the Lazika port project and the development of other Georgian ports lose their meaning, and the country’s only perspective becomes the accelerated emigration of the population and deepening poverty.

“The Lazika port project loses its meaning, as do the existing Georgian ports, and Georgia’s only perspective becomes the even more accelerated emigration of the population and universal poverty. This is where the severance of strategic ties with America and Europe has led us. How ironic that all this is happening on the anniversary of the August War,” Saakashvili writes.
