Irakli Kobakhidze: The tragic political situation in the European Union is most clearly confirmed by today’s statement from the European People’s Party (EPP), of which the National Movement is a member

The tragic political situation in the European Union is most clearly confirmed by today’s statement from the European People’s Party (EPP), stated Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze during a briefing at the Government Administration.

According to him, the EPP is the largest European party, and the “National Movement,” which established a “bloody authoritarian regime” in Georgia, is a member of the EPP.

“Let me remind you that the EPP is the largest European party, uniting the most European ruling parties. I also remind you that the ‘National Movement,’ which established a bloody authoritarian regime in Georgia and, over nine years, distinguished itself by the total violation of democracy, the rule of law, and human rights, is a member of the EPP. Against the backdrop of the ‘National Movement’ and other radical opposition forces attempting to overthrow the government elected by the Georgian people and inflicting severe physical harm on several police officers—two of whom survived death by the grace of God—the European People’s Party is not calling for sanctions against the perpetrators and enemies of Georgian democracy but against Bidzina Ivanishvili and other leaders of the ruling team. This EPP statement best helps Georgian society understand the calamity to which the loss of sovereignty and externally controlled European bureaucracy have led the European Union,” the Prime Minister stated.

For reference, the European People’s Party (EPP) issued a statement addressing the local self-governance elections held in Georgia on October 4 and the events that unfolded.

“As the Georgian people continue their fight for their freedoms and a European future, Bidzina Ivanishvili’s ‘Georgian Dream’ held yet another fraudulent election on October 4, marked by the lowest voter turnout in Georgia’s history, which major opposition parties boycotted amid repression and violence against regime opponents. Recent detentions and threats of persecution from ‘Georgian Dream’ representatives aim to restrict people’s right to protest, suppress the pro-Western opposition, and instill widespread fear in society,” the statement reads.

The European People’s Party “calls on the European Union to impose sanctions against those undermining the rule of law and human rights in Georgia.”
