The situation has sharply deteriorated in Georgia with serious democratic backsliding as never before in a candidate country, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said when presenting the 2025 enlargement package to the European Parliament.
She said that an erosion of the rule of law and severe restrictions on fundamental rights have been observed in Georgia.
“We saw a rapid erosion of the rule of law and severe restrictions of fundamental rights. Georgian authorities need to urgently reverse their course to respond to their citizens' demand for a European future,” said Marta Kos.
