“This is not a fight against corruption. It is clear that there is infighting between clans within the ruling party and that investigative bodies are being used for this purpose,” states information released by Transparency International Georgia.
According to the organization, it is evident that the investigation has selectively focused on specific former high-ranking officials of Georgian Dream.
“In recent months, investigations against high-ranking officials, their arrests, and their release on bail have raised many questions: is this truly a fight against elite corruption, or is it a clan confrontation within Georgian Dream, through which Bidzina Ivanishvili and Irakli Kobakhidze are eliminating former party members under the guise of combating corruption? Transparency International Georgia examined the ongoing investigations and the individuals involved. As a result, it became clear that those under investigation are mainly members of either the clan of former State Security Service head Grigol Liluashvili or that of former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
In recent years, corruption allegations have also accumulated against many other high-ranking officials, yet the investigation has not addressed these cases. It is a fact that the investigation has selectively targeted specific former high-ranking officials of Georgian Dream. Therefore, it is evident that there is clan infighting within the ruling party and that investigative bodies are being used for this purpose. It is unclear exactly why Bidzina Ivanishvili has fallen out with his former subordinates. In recent months, many versions have circulated to explain this process, but there is still no publicly available evidence to determine the exact reason. However, one thing is clear - this is not a fight against corruption,” the statement says.
