Giorgi Vashadze, leader of "Strategy Aghmashenebeli", commented on the ongoing trial of opposition politicians in the sabotage case at Tbilisi City Court. He described the case as baseless and politically motivated.
“Do you know what this case is about? It’s about stopping our fight, giving up the struggle for justice, abandoning Georgia’s EU integration, and silencing us. There are no witnesses, no evidence - just my name on an empty sheet for 15 years. Ask the prosecutor to name even two pieces of evidence: there are none, no audio, no meetings, nothing. This case exists to make us give up the fight for justice, democracy, and equal opportunity in Georgia,” Vashadze said.
He also criticized Georgia’s exclusion from recent regional engagements, including the visit of U.S. Vice President Jay D. Pence, contrasting Georgia’s absence with Armenia and Azerbaijan’s active participation.
“It saddens me that the U.S. Vice President visited the region, went to Yerevan and Baku, and Georgia was skipped. Georgia used to be the region’s leader, a model of development, the strongest U.S. partner here. The focus should be on why Georgia fell out of all processes. While high-value investments and projects are moving forward in neighboring countries, we are absent,” Vashadze stated.
For context, the General Prosecutor’s Office has initiated new criminal proceedings against Mikheil Saakashvili, Giorgi Vashadze, Nika Gvaramia, Nika Melia, Zurab Japaridze, Elene Khoshtaria, Mamuka Khazaradze, and Badri Japaridze. The charges relate to crimes against the state, including sabotage, assistance to hostile foreign states, financing activities against Georgia’s constitutional order and national security, and incitement to overthrow the constitutional order or state authority. The trial is currently ongoing at Tbilisi City Court.
