Irakli Kobakhidze: The British sanctions were aimed at disrupting the debates - this is indisputably evidenced by the unified "message box" of local foreign agents, who declared the sanctions as a basis for avoiding the debates

The British sanctions were aimed at disrupting the debates — this is indisputably evidenced by the unified "message box" of local foreign agents and their numerous statements, in which they declared the sanctions as a basis for avoiding the debates, — this statement was disseminated on social media by Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

According to him, in this case, the role of violator of media freedom and disruptor of debates was assumed not by Nika Gvaramia, but directly by the British bureaucracy.

Furthermore, as the Prime Minister noted, unlike previous years, the Georgian state is now so strong that no one will be allowed to violate media freedom and media pluralism in Georgia.

"Approximately one month ago, our political team published a statement about opening public-political debates on television. We explained that healthy debates were unconditionally necessary to reduce polarization in Georgian society and defeat hatred.

When publishing the statement, we recalled a fact from several years ago when foreign agents deliberately closed the space for public-political debates in order to contribute to the division of society and the intensification of hatred. For this purpose, they used Nika Gvaramia as their main instrument, who, with the dirtiest forms of insults and abuse of people live on air, made healthy discussion impossible.

Although not even a month has passed since the resumption of debates on Georgian television, it can already be boldly said that our initiative to open discussion was necessary and has already achieved significant success. From our perspective, this success is expressed in various forms:

First — an opportunity has emerged for society to hear healthy, substantive polemics on issues important to it, on which previously it received incomplete information only in monologue mode, without confrontation of opinions;

Second — a space has emerged where the confrontation of opinions is directed not toward dividing people with different views, but toward uniting them around a common goal;

Third — although we are subjective, we still believe we can boldly say that the debates held so far have clearly demonstrated the clear superiority of the ruling team over its opponents both in terms of competence and conscientiousness.

Naturally, this result worried local foreign agents and their foreign patrons. Their anxiety is also confirmed by the fact that the vast majority of radicals hysterically avoid debates. Against this background, is it surprising that they would once again try to artificially stop a process that should ultimately lead society to greater consolidation and better information?

The British sanctions against two leading Georgian broadcasters should also be viewed in this context. The fact that the British sanctions were aimed at disrupting the debates is indisputably evidenced by the unified 'message box' of local foreign agents and their numerous statements, in which they declared the sanctions as a basis for avoiding the debates.

It turns out that, unlike 2007 and 2020, in this case the role of violator of media freedom and disruptor of debates was assumed not by Nika Gvaramia, but directly by the British bureaucracy, which, in its essence and content, has sunk to the level of an ordinary foreign agent like Nika Gvaramia — completely devoid of morality and values.

However, today's situation differs from 2007 and 2020 in that both Georgian society and the Georgian state are now much stronger, and no one will be allowed to violate media freedom and media pluralism in Georgia. Accordingly, society will continue to have full opportunity in the future to hear different opinions on various issues and make informed decisions regarding the fate of its own country," — stated Kobakhidze.
