Henna Virkkunen on the suspension of visa-free travel for diplomatic passport holders: This is a response to violent repression against peaceful protesters, political opponents, and independent media

Today’s decision represents a response to the violent repression against peaceful protesters, political opponents, and independent media, - this is how Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, commented on the suspension of visa-free travel for holders of Georgian diplomatic, service, and official passports.

According to her statement, repression in Georgia began after the Georgian authorities declared that they would not open negotiations with the European Union until 2028.

“Visa liberalization is a key to promoting mobility between the European Union and partner countries around the world. Those who do not respect fundamental rights should not enjoy this freedom. The European Union stands with the Georgian people,” - stated Henna Virkkunen.
