Małgorzata Gosiewska: We must call on Tbilisi to release all political prisoners as quickly as possible, to repeal laws that are repressive by nature - this country deserves a good and healthy future, the European Union is obliged to help it

We must call on Tbilisi to release all political prisoners as quickly as possible. Laws that are repressive by their nature should be repealed. This country deserves a good and healthy future, the European Union is obliged to help it, - stated European Parliament member Małgorzata Gosiewska in the European Parliament, where debates on the issue of Georgia are taking place.

According to her, "a country that was recently a symbol of reforms is now drowning in corruption, repressions, and political violence."

"150 people are in prison for political reasons, including opposition leaders, journalists, social workers, students, ordinary citizens who are punished for their beliefs and peaceful protest. Mr. Saakashvili, the former president, is an example of this. I would like to note that the fact is not mentioned in the resolution that was under discussion yesterday. This surprises me, it worries me. There is no time for political games. We really need to fight the lack of rule of law in this country. I have submitted amendments on this.

One thing we must emphasize - the regime operates with anti-Western propaganda, disinformation, just like Russia. Therefore, EU sanctions should target not only propaganda-style media, but also those individuals responsible for the destruction of democracy in Georgia," - stated Gosiewska.
