Irakli Kobalia: The OSCE calls on Georgia's de facto government to abandon the ban on political parties, and also notes the problem of political prisoners - these are issues against which constructive dialogue is simply impossible

The OSCE calls on Georgia's de facto government to abandon the ban on political parties, and they also highlight the problem of political prisoners in this country. These are the issues against the background of which constructive dialogue is simply impossible, - stated Irakli Kobalia, political secretary of "Freedom Square", in a conversation with journalists.

According to his assessment, "Georgian Dream" can demonstrate readiness for dialogue by resolving the problems related to the issue of political prisoners.

"The OSCE is an organization created to promote dialogue. Therefore, their call for dialogue is absolutely logical and understandable. Their working format involves meeting with various participants in the political process and then summarizing the content of those meetings. If we pay attention to what is written in this delegation's statement, we will inevitably notice that they call on Georgia's de facto government to abandon the ban on political parties. They also point out the problem of political prisoners in this country. These are the issues against the background of which constructive dialogue is simply impossible. For dialogue to take place, the appropriate environment must exist. Unfortunately, we do not have such an environment.

'Georgian Dream' can demonstrate readiness for dialogue by resolving the problems related to the issue of political prisoners. In addition, by addressing the problems related to a fair judiciary and the possibility of holding truly competitive elections in this country. After that, dialogue will certainly become possible.

The OSCE itself acknowledges the problems that are so urgent and important for the country. Without overcoming these problems, dialogue cannot take place," - stated Kobalia.

He also commented on the draft resolution of the European Parliament, which states that "the European Parliament strongly condemns the politically motivated detention of Elene Khoshtaria and all other persons. It also condemns the adoption of restrictive legislation aimed at suppressing dissenting opinions and calls on 'Dream' to repeal these laws."

According to Kobalia, when the European Union speaks about these issues, "it fundamentally excludes Georgia's movement toward the European Union."

"The European Parliament is a very important institution in the European Union system. 'Georgian Dream' often responds to this with different content, saying that it doesn't matter what MEPs say. It matters a great deal because the European Parliament is one of the key bodies that influences the European Union's final decisions and its foreign policy. When the European Union speaks about the existence of political prisoners in Georgia, when it speaks about democracy dying in this country, this fundamentally excludes Georgia's movement toward the European Union. It also excludes our future in the European Union space and within its framework. Unfortunately, this is the crisis in which Georgia finds itself today, and the draft resolution of the European Parliament also emphasizes this," - noted Irakli Kobalia.
