The Prime Minister will be able to appoint the head of the National Statistics Office and council members without parliamentary approval

The Prime Minister of Georgia will be able to appoint the Executive Director and council members of Geostat without the consent of the Parliament of Georgia. The law requiring parliamentary approval for appointing the executive director and council members of the National Statistics Office will no longer exist.

The relevant amendments will be introduced to the Law on Official Statistics and to the Parliament’s Rules of Procedure. The draft legislation was prepared by members of the ruling party Georgian Dream.

If the project is adopted, the Executive Director of Geostat will be appointed and dismissed by the Prime Minister. The same principle will apply to the appointment of Geostat council members.

At the same time, the Executive Director of Geostat will remain accountable to both Parliament and the government and must submit an annual report on Geostat’s activities to both institutions no later than May 1 each year.
