"The sentence handed down to another opposition politician, Elene Khoshtaria, which provides for 18 months of imprisonment, is considered disproportionate by us," – stated European Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper at a briefing in response to a question from a “Publika” journalist about the verdict issued against “Droa” party leader Elene Khoshtaria.
"The verdict against another opposition politician, Elene Khoshtaria, which envisages 18 months of deprivation of liberty, is disproportionate in our view. This once again demonstrates that the Georgian authorities are acting contrary to basic democratic standards. We regard this as a continuation of democratic repression that must end. This is part of the repression directed against the opposition, journalists, civil activists, and those people who are fighting for fundamental rights and freedom of expression. Our message is clear: all persons unjustly detained must be released," – said the European Commission spokesperson.
For information: Politician Elene Khoshtaria, the leader of “Droa”, who was charged with damaging Kaha Kaladze’s election banner, has been found guilty by the court.
