Levan Ioseliani at a meeting with Michael O’Flaherty — the discussion covered those detained during the protests, detained politicians, and Mzia Amaghlobeli; questions were raised about whether individuals who participated in beating people have been held accountable

The meeting between the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O’Flaherty, and the Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Ioseliani, has concluded.

As Levan Ioseliani told journalists after the meeting, one of the topics discussed with the Commissioner was the condition of individuals detained during protests, detained politicians, and journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli.

“It was a very important meeting. The discussion focused on the human rights situation in Georgia. He was interested in what processes I am involved in as the Public Defender and the report I presented to Parliament — we discussed that report in detail. Several issues were highlighted, including the situation of our citizens living along the occupation line.

We also discussed the condition of people detained as a result of protests, who are currently in prisons. At the same time, questions were raised about whether those individuals who may have been responsible for beating people have been held accountable.

Another issue was the general situation of organizations in Georgia, including recent changes to the legislative system adopted by Parliament.

We spoke broadly about everything, including detained politicians. He was interested in their condition, as well as the situation of journalist Mzia Amaghlobeli, and inquired about her health in detention. We provided information on everything we are involved in and have worked on.

One of the topics of discussion was the amendments made to the Law on Grants, the Code of Administrative Offenses, and other laws.

It was a good meeting, and I hope that our partnership, which has connected us for two years, will continue. He visited last year as well and has come again this year, which I think is appropriate. The human rights situation is important to him not only in Georgia but more broadly. From here, he travels to other countries. I am glad about his visit, because when I go to Strasbourg, I always try to meet him and discuss issues that are important to both of us,” Levan Ioseliani said.

Earlier, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O’Flaherty, held a meeting with representatives of non-governmental organizations.
