The leader of the Droa party, Elene Khoshtaria, together with 7 affected women, addressed a letter to the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O'Flaherty today about the violent practice of stripping in pre-trial detention centers, - the Droa party reports.
According to them, Elene Khoshtaria and the signatories of the letter call on the Commissioner to use all mechanisms within his authority to end this degrading practice and hold all perpetrators accountable.
In addition, according to Droa, the letter emphasizes that the violence committed against Elene Khoshtaria in the Digomi detention center in March 2025 is not an isolated case. According to them, the practice of forced stripping is systemic and is used to intimidate and intimidate participants in the democratic, pro-European resistance movement.
“The OSCE Moscow Mechanism report clearly emphasizes that cases of forced stripping are not just procedural violations, they are a systemic violation of human rights. And this practice is one of the pillars of a broader, state-organized system of torture,” the appeal reads.
According to the signatories of the letter, in order to stop the degrading practice of forcible stripping of detainees, it is not enough to simply document these cases – the perpetrators must be punished and their accountability will be the only effective deterrent against the normalization of torture.
“The unstoppable resistance, strength and endurance of the Georgian citizens participating in the protest demonstrate that stability cannot be established in Georgia without restoring justice and recognizing human dignity as the most important value,” the appeal reads.
According to Droa, the practice of illegal and forcible stripping of detained women and not only women became known to the general public after the events of November 28, 2024.
The appeal is signed by: Tamuna Giorgadze, Lika Basilaia-Shavgulidze, Mariam Melikishvili, Nutsa Makharadze, Nino Bardzimashvili, Nino Datashvili, Elene Khoshtaria and Kristine Botkoveli (Nancy Woland).
