Shalva Papuashvili: It is important to show that the path chosen by Brussels toward Georgia and candidate countries is completely detached from European values

According to the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, during his speech at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Turkey, he will address the threats of external interference and the need for a unified approach.

He also noted that discussions will be held with representatives of EU member states regarding Georgia–EU relations and the current situation.

“Today is the main day of the Assembly, when we will have the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings, including a meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament of Luxembourg and with speakers from the region. I will also have the opportunity to address the Assembly. Our main message at the conference concerns the new threats that are clearly visible in all countries. Every country is trying to protect its national interests from external interference, and in this regard, I will speak about the need for a unified approach so that hybrid threats of external interference are met with a consistent response.

There will be discussions with representatives of EU member states about Georgia–EU relations and the unfortunate reality we are seeing from Brussels. Unfortunately, the mode of dialogue is being closed off, and a one-sided directive approach is becoming increasingly dominant in Brussels. Therefore, it is important to make our voice heard by the parliaments of EU member states and to demonstrate that the path currently chosen by Brussels toward Georgia and candidate countries is completely detached from European values. It is important for European parliaments to express their own positions in this regard,” said Shalva Papuashvili.
