“Brussels has become a barrier between Georgia and the member states of the European Union and is pursuing its own agenda. Therefore, it was important for us to speak one-on-one directly with our colleagues and once again explain how we see the relationship between Georgia and the European Union,” said the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, to journalists in Turkey after attending the General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
According to Papuashvili, the parties agreed that inter-parliamentary relations will be intensified at all levels.
“First of all, it was important for us to speak directly with the parliaments of EU member states and their leadership, because unfortunately we see that Brussels has become a barrier between Georgia and EU member states and is pursuing its own agenda, rather than the agenda of the peoples of the member states. Therefore, it was important for us to speak one-on-one directly with our colleagues — in this case, representatives of the parliaments of Luxembourg and Greece — and once again explain how we view Georgia-EU relations.
I am very pleased that we had very positive discussions with both counterparts. We agreed that relations between our parliaments will be intensified at all levels — at the level of parliamentary leadership, as well as committees and friendship groups — and that we will have visits, exchanges, and ongoing dialogue.
Such meetings demonstrate that, unfortunately, Brussels, instead of acting in the best interests of EU member states, is acting according to its own agenda, which in some cases contradicts the best interests of the European Union,” Papuashvili said.
