You are lying under oath! A criminal is standing before me! Aren't you ashamed? Look in my children’s eyes! - This is how the accused politician, Levan Khabeishvili, addressed the head of one of the departments of the Special Tasks Department, Shota Papuashvili, at the court hearing.
Shota Papuashvili is a witness for the prosecution. As he stated, he heard on television and social networks that Levan Khabeishvili was calling on the State Security Service employees not to use special means at the rally, not to fulfill the obligations imposed, and in return he was offering money. According to him, the purpose of offering money was presumably to win over Special Tasks Department employees.
"Politician Levan Khabeishvili called on the employees of the Special Tasks Department through social networks and various television channels not to fulfill their assigned duties, to refuse to use special means or to participate in training and exercises. He also called on our employees to provide information, and in return, he offered the employees of the State Security Service $200,000.
Khabeishvili made a general appeal to the employees of the Special Tasks Department, not to anyone in particular, that is, the appeal concerned everyone.
In my opinion, one of the reasons for Levan Khabeishvili's appeal, or the offer of money, was to win over the employees of the Special Tasks Department, to put it bluntly... I was at the State Security Service for questioning regarding the offer of money," Shota Papuashvili said.
After that, Levan Khabeishvili addressed him.
"How can you lie under oath? A criminal is standing before me! Aren't you ashamed," Khabeishvili said.
Judge Irakli Khuskivadze called on the accused to exercise restraint.
"Restrain yourself as much as possible. Of course, there is emotion, but don't give me a reason to make you leave the courtroom. I have no desire to do so," the judge addressed.
“I am not insulting, I am sorry, I got angry,” Khabeishvili said.
After that, Khabeishvili asked the employee of the Special Tasks Department whether he participated in “the criminal act that was committed against him.”
“No. I am not the type to beat people,” he replied.
“Let the public judge,” Levan Khabeishvili replied.
After that, Khabeishvili and his lawyer asked Shota Papuashvili why he did not contact the relevant agencies if he learned that Khabeishvili was offering bribes to Special Tasks Department employees.
“The relevant service reacted,” Shota Papuashvili said.
