The Court of Appeals upheld the City Court’s decision sentencing protest detainee Saba Jikia to 4 years and 6 months in prison
Saba Jikia, convicted of assaulting a police officer, was also found guilty by the Court of Appeals.
The appellate court upheld the decision of Tbilisi City Court judge Tamar Mchedlishvili, sentencing Saba Jikia to 4 years and 6 months of imprisonment.
The Tbilisi City Court’s decision had been appealed by both the prosecution and the defense.
For context, Saba Jikia was charged under Article 353¹, Part 1 of the Criminal Code, which refers to assaulting a police officer. Specifically, the prosecution accused him of attacking a police officer during a protest on Rustaveli Avenue on November 30, 2024. He was arrested on December 5, 2024, and on July 10, 2025, the court of first instance found him guilty and sentenced him to 4 years and 6 months in prison.
