Geladze, who previously headed the Ministry of Internal Affairs, was confirmed by Parliament in a vote where 85 MPs supported his candidacy and 12 voted against.
According to the “On the State Security Service” law and Parliament’s rules of procedure, Geladze will serve a six-year term as head of the agency.
Before the vote, Parliament acknowledged the voluntary resignation of Mamuka Mdinaradze and thus the early termination of his mandate as head of the security service.
Over the past year, the issue of appointing the head of the State Security Service has appeared on Parliament’s agenda for the third time. After the resignation of Grigol Liluashvili, Parliament appointed Anri Okhanashvili as head of the agency on April 4, 2025. Okhanashvili led the service for only four months. On September 3, 2025, Mamuka Mdinaradze was elected as head of the State Security Service.
Mdinaradze is expected to become the Minister of State for Coordination of Law Enforcement Agencies. This position does not currently exist in the government structure, and Parliament is considering an expedited bill to establish it.
