Shalva Kereselidze: Georgian Dream hid the new head of the State Security Service and again supported a party-serving SSS chief

“The Georgian Dream first hid the new head of the State Security Service during committee proceedings and closed the committee session, and then, through a committee vote, did not allow us to ask questions at the plenary session,” said Shalva Kereselidze, chair of the parliamentary faction “For Georgia,” during a briefing.

According to him, today “Georgian Dream” once again supported a State Security Service head who serves the party.

“A few minutes ago, ‘Georgian Dream’ first hid the new head of the State Security Service during the committee session and closed the committee, and then, through a vote held in committee, did not allow us to ask questions at the plenary session. In this way, ‘Georgian Dream’ elected the new head of the State Security Service in a hidden manner today, and of course, he did not have our support. Today, the SSS head was concealed from the public and elected in a non-transparent manner. The public had the right to hear the sharp questions that exist in society and to hear answers to these questions from the future head of the SSS, but Georgian Dream wants a SSS head who serves non-citizens; they want a party-serving SSS head.

Today, ‘Georgian Dream’ once again supported a party-serving head of the State Security Service,” said Shalva Kereselidze.

For context, Parliament approved Gela Geladze as the new head of the State Security Service, who previously headed the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Before the vote, Parliament acknowledged the voluntary resignation of Mamuka Mdinaradze from the position of SSS head and, accordingly, the early termination of his mandate.

Over the past year, the issue of electing a head of the State Security Service has been on Parliament’s agenda for the third time. After the resignation of Grigol Liluashvili from the post, Parliament appointed Anri Okhanashvili as SSS head on April 4, 2025.

Okhanashvili led the SSS for only four months. On September 3, 2025, Mamuka Mdinaradze was elected head of the State Security Service.
