“We have heard an alarming statement from Maria Zakharova that Russia is confidentially working to move the Geneva talks format to ‘neutral territory’ and is now searching for such a ‘neutral location.’ We immediately demand that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia publicly clarify whether it is participating in these ‘confidential’ negotiations and what the state’s position is on this issue,” the party “For Georgia” said in a statement.
According to the statement, the “neutral environment” mentioned by Russia would be a setting where Georgia’s sovereignty would no longer be protected by the international Western framework.
“We consider it alarming that the dynamics of the Georgian Dream government’s policy toward the occupied territories are dangerous and damaging to national interests, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. This began with Bidzina Ivanishvili’s apology to the occupiers, effectively declaring Georgia the aggressor in the 2008 war, and the initiation of criminal prosecution against former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia. He is being prosecuted for defending Georgian land and attempting to stop creeping occupation by setting up a police checkpoint in the village of Chorchana, while the Georgian Dream government uses the rhetoric and arguments of the Russian occupation regime in Tskhinvali,” the statement reads.
The party also recalled that the Geneva format was established after the 2008 war as an international platform, with the participation of organizations such as the OSCE, the UN, the EU, and the United States, to support Georgia in defending its national and sovereign interests.
“The ‘neutral environment’ mentioned by Russia would mean a setting where Georgia’s sovereignty is no longer protected by the international Western umbrella, effectively implying the abolition of this format.
It is clear that the Russian Federation, equipped with international political, military, informational, and economic levers, is now carrying out an active and large-scale attack against Georgia’s territorial integrity and national interests. Therefore, a clear answer must be given as to where the Georgian Dream government stands today—whether it is defending Georgia’s national interests or acting as an ally of the Russian state in attacking our sovereignty,” the statement concludes.
