The time has come to appeal to the French prosecutor's office to hold French citizen Bidzina Ivanishvili accountable for committing international crimes, said Nika Gvaramia, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change.
He responded to the resolution adopted by the lower house of the French National Assembly regarding Georgia.
“Yesterday, the lower house of the French National Assembly adopted a resolution condemning the “illiberal and authoritarian regression” of the Georgian government and emphasizing Ivanishvili’s negative influence on the country’s political institutions;
The resolution includes a request that the French government consider revoking the Legion of Honor previously awarded to Bidzina Ivanishvili;
The Assembly supports the de facto suspension of Georgia’s EU accession process until the country returns to democratic values and holds elections in line with international standards,” Gvaramia wrote.
For information, the French National Assembly approved a resolution by 68 votes to 28 condemning the Georgian government’s authoritarian moves, violations of fundamental rights, restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, and the disproportionate use of force against peaceful protesters.
The text of the resolution states that the French National Assembly expresses its full solidarity with the Georgian people mobilized for a democratic and European future.
The resolution welcomes the joint declaration of 11 July 2025 by twenty European states, including France, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and the High Representative of the European Union, "condemning the trend towards authoritarianism in Georgia".
“The resolution condemns the authoritarian course of the Georgian government, the violation of fundamental rights, restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, and the disproportionate use of force against peaceful protesters; expresses deep concern about the information published by the British Broadcasting Corporation on December 1, 2025, which states that Georgian law enforcement agencies allegedly used brombenzyl cyanide against peaceful protesters in the fall of 2024,” reads the resolution.
According to the document, the French National Assembly supports the request for an independent international investigation into the matter.
The resolution calls on the European institutions to maintain the de facto suspension of Georgia’s EU accession process until the political criteria are met, namely “respect for political pluralism and the protection of fundamental rights, such as the rights of expression, freedom of assembly and association, and the holding of free, fair and international-standard parliamentary elections.”
“The resolution calls on the Government of the French Republic to actively support democratic actors in Georgia, including non-governmental organizations, independent media and academic institutions; calls on the Government of the French Republic to publicly condemn foreign interference, in particular the influence of the Russian regime on Georgian political institutions and oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili,” reads the resolution .
The document also states that the French National Assembly calls on the Government of the French Republic to continue its strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders.
