If we had followed the demands of the European Union and escalated with Russia, today the Russian Duma would be ratifying other things, not such agreements - in conditions when the rules-based international order is broken, war and killing of people cannot be stopped, of course, the resources for Georgia to influence such a decision are limited, - the Chairman of the Georgian Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, told journalists, responding to the approval of the law “On Deepening Allied Cooperation” with occupied Tskhinvali by the Russian Duma.
According to him, in today's world, where international law has collapsed, international organizations are incapable.
Papuashvili says that for the government, “the main thing is that our policy is aimed at not damaging the long-term interest that implies the unification of Georgia.”
"International partners may be able to do something with Ukraine, I don't know what international partners can do here. We see that, unfortunately, on the one hand, international organizations, the UN, whose responsibility it is and on whom we used to rely, are incapable. We have seen that in today's world, where international law has collapsed, these organizations are incapable. On the other hand, there are foreign countries that we used to rely on, but unfortunately, we see that they either cannot or, as we see in the example of Ukraine, some do not want to or think differently about how the conflict should be resolved. As for Tskhinvali - if I am not mistaken, the agreement was ratified in the Russian Duma. These are precisely the risks of the occupation that we are talking about. These are precisely the harmful consequences of the occupation, which are ongoing. That is why it is important that Georgia is able to solve these challenges with a reasonable policy, a peaceful policy. We have repeatedly said that we have two national tasks - the unification of the country and the increase in the well-being of the population. All our decisions serve precisely this purpose. If we had followed the demands of the European Union and escalated with Russia, today the Russian Duma would have ratified other things, not such agreements. The processes would have been a little more difficult and advanced if we had listened to Brussels. Look at Ukraine and see what these risks mean in practice.
In conditions when the rules-based international order is broken, when it is impossible to stop not only resolutions, but also wars and killings, of course, the resources to influence such a decision by Georgia are limited. Therefore, the main thing for us is that our policy be directed so as not to damage the long-term interest that implies the unification of Georgia,” Papuashvili said.
For information, the Russian State Duma has ratified the “Treaty on Deepening Allied Cooperation” with occupied Tskhinvali.
