Irakli Kobakhidze: European structures are practically losing their face entirely - media freedom means nothing to the European Parliament, which has turned into something resembling the Supreme Soviet of the USSR - this is a tragic situation

Media freedom means nothing to the European Parliament, and it has become similar to the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union — this is what Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists, commenting on the European Parliament’s alleged sanctioning of the TV channel “Imedi,” as well as Moldova’s refusal to accredit “Imedi,” “Rustavi 2,” and “PosTV.”

According to the head of government, what was started by Britain has now been continued by the European Parliament.

“We see that European structures are practically completely losing their face. Media freedom means nothing to them. What was started by Britain has now been continued by the European Parliament. This is completely shameful and does not meet any standards — the decision they made. Media freedom means nothing to the European Parliament. The European Parliament has become similar to the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. What we are seeing is a tragic situation. I hope that in the near future all of this will be corrected.

This is an absolutely Soviet-style approach that certain European politicians are demonstrating. We are not surprised that those politicians who come forward with such initiatives have very questionable reputations and questionable pasts. What we are seeing in the European Parliament indicates overall degradation,” the Prime Minister said.

For context, it was reported that the European Parliament allegedly banned “Imedi” from working inside its building for one year. According to information released by the TV channel itself, the reason was an attempted interview with European Parliament member Rasa Juknevičienė. The report also states that the European Parliament imposed a one-year restriction on “Imedi,” while Moldova reportedly denied accreditation to “Imedi,” “Rustavi 2,” and “PosTV.”
