“In March 2026, the Commission suspended visa-free travel for holders of Georgian diplomatic and service passports for an initial period of 12 months. When a visa-free travel arrangement is suspended, the Commission launches a process with the relevant third country that we call an enhanced dialogue,” European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert said in response to a question from Euroscope regarding the meeting scheduled for June 11 with the Georgian side on visa-free travel issues.
“In March 2026, the Commission suspended visa-free travel for holders of Georgian diplomatic and service passports for an initial period of 12 months. This followed an agreement reached by the member states. When a visa-free travel arrangement is suspended, the Commission initiates a process with the relevant third country that we refer to as an enhanced dialogue. Its purpose is to address the circumstances that led to the suspension. In this context, the first meeting between the European Commission and a delegation of Georgian officials will take place on June 11. That is what this meeting is about,” Lammert stated.
According to him, the Commission believes that the actions of the Georgian authorities undermine the principles on which visa liberalization is based.
“As a reminder, the Commission considers that the actions of the Georgian authorities undermine the principles underpinning visa liberalization, including respect for human rights and democratic principles. These actions are incompatible with the norms and values of the European Union and hinder the stable development of economic, humanitarian, cultural, scientific, and other ties between the European Union and Georgia,” Markus Lammert said.
Asked what could be expected after the meeting—whether there would be an assessment, a public statement, an opportunity to ask questions, a briefing, or any other format for receiving information afterward—the spokesperson replied:
“No. This is a technical meeting taking place within the framework and context of the suspension process. Perhaps you can ask me again after the meeting, and if possible, I will be able to provide information then,” Lammert said.
