“The treatment prescribed by Elene’s Turkish doctor must be followed, including when and in what dosage she should take her medication. These medications should either be delivered to her by relatives or purchased by the state,” said Zurab Japaridze, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change, commenting on the health condition of fellow coalition leader Elene Khoshtaria.
According to Japaridze, consultations with local specialists are unnecessary because a diagnosis has already been established and there is a doctor who has been overseeing her treatment.
“Elene had health problems before she was detained. She has a serious illness. This is not a matter that can be dismissed lightly. These are serious health issues that require serious treatment. Elene attempted to receive treatment in Georgia, but neither a proper diagnosis nor effective treatment could be provided here.
Elene has a prescription from a Turkish doctor, and it must be followed, including the timing and dosage of her medications. These medications should either be brought to her by her relatives or purchased by the state. We hear reports that consultations have been conducted, but no one is interested in that. What matters is the treatment plan prepared by the Turkish doctor.
In Elene’s case, this may be of fundamental and vital importance.
As for transferring Elene abroad for treatment, we know Elene’s position on the matter, but I believe that this issue should ultimately be decided by her family members.
No one needs occasional consultations from local specialists or visits every two weeks. The diagnosis has already been established, and there is a doctor who has been managing the treatment process,” Japaridze said.
For context, attorney Shota Tutberidze stated at a press conference that the health condition of Elene Khoshtaria, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change, has deteriorated. According to him, Khoshtaria is experiencing severe joint pain and difficulty moving, which at times prevents her from writing and requires her to use a crutch for mobility.
Later, the Special Penitentiary Service issued a statement saying that “Elene Khoshtaria is provided with all appropriate conditions and has uninterrupted access to all services, including medical care.”
