“The aim of the adopted resolution is to somehow preserve the resources of this extremist-oriented opposition in Georgia, so that they are not dismantled – this is specifically why this latest resolution against Ivanishvili has been created,” said First Vice-Speaker of Parliament Gia Volski while commenting on the EU report.
According to him, the political aspects reflected in the resolution represent the “apex and peak of injustice,” as Georgia is a European country by all statistical indicators.
“The focus is on Bidzina Ivanishvili, that he should be sanctioned, all his resources should be destroyed, and no project should be allowed to develop in Georgia. Also, people have appeared who criticize the efforts he made in the national interest, where quite serious and substantial funds were spent. The aim is to cast a shadow over these issues and restrict his ability to use resources for his country.
As for the political aspects reflected in the resolution, it is the apex of injustice, because Georgia is a European country by all statistical indicators. Moreover, any recent scientific analysis shows that Georgia’s indicators are better than those of all candidate countries, and in some respects even ahead of EU and G7 countries. Problems still exist, but this resolution has a specific purpose, just like previous ones. The goal is to somehow preserve the resources of this extremist-oriented opposition in Georgia so that they are not dismantled. This resolution against Ivanishvili was created specifically for that purpose,” Volski said.
In response to a clarifying question on whether, after this resolution, Bidzina Ivanishvili might try to improve relations with the EU, Volski said that not only Ivanishvili but the entire Georgian Dream team believes that the EU integration process should continue.
“It is not only about Ivanishvili. I mean the entire Georgian Dream team – Bidzina Ivanishvili, the Prime Minister, the party leadership, and any member of the government believe that the process called European integration should continue. There is no alternative to this. However, the demands placed on us are essentially impossible to fulfill.
They tell us that we must allow issues such as the inflow of ‘black money’ into the country – ‘we do not allow it, but you must allow it because we pay this money and the country must be treated as we wish.’ LGBT propaganda must be allowed, and there should be no stigmatization in this regard, although no rights violations are taking place. There is talk about medical procedures and same-sex marriage as well.
Most importantly, they are demanding that we impose economic sanctions on Russia. They have not been able to prove that Georgia is helping Russia, Iran, or any other country bypass sanctions. Since they have failed to prove this, these are empty, baseless resolutions.
I thank all the delegations that did not support this demagogic resolution. But it is clear that their number will increase in the future. The plan is to create confrontation not only between Brussels and Tbilisi, but also within Georgia itself, among people who are considered unacceptable simply for supporting peace rather than war,” Volski said.
