“The so-called sabotage case is a grand theater of the absurd whose sole purpose is to provide Bidzina Ivanishvili with leverage over his political opponents,” said Tazo Datunashvili, one of the leaders of “Strong Georgia - Lelo,” on the PalitraNews program Resume.
According to Datunashvili, the authorities are using the case to spread fear and turn it into a political instrument.
“This is Bidzina Ivanishvili’s personal obsession and nothing more. Ivanishvili got angry about something - at Kobakhidze, at Europe, at the world, at God, at everything - and decided that there would be three court hearings a week. When you ask what the goal is, they say justice must be delivered quickly.
There are testimonies with no factual basis, denunciations, texts written in the genre of anonymous accusations, and people claiming that because these politicians travel to Brussels, they are engaged in sabotaging Georgia there.
This is a system in which the entire state apparatus is built around one man; a country where the rule of law and due process simply do not exist. Nobody is treated as a human being. It is a dystopia. By the end of the play, everyone turns into a rhinoceros - a rhinoceros in the judge’s seat, a rhinoceros in the prosecutor’s seat, a rhinoceros in the witness stand.
There are specific witnesses who testify in this case and also in the cases of prisoners of conscience. They are professional lying witnesses. Being a witness is their profession; their job is to appear in court as witnesses. This is North Korea - that is the reality we live in.
Politics has been reduced to the level of a cheese merchant’s bargaining. He thinks this is some kind of political instrument.
What we have here is a man who spreads fear. The Prime Minister is terrified to the point of trembling. He is so afraid that when that man loses his temper, he has to appear the next morning and hold a briefing as if kneeling before him. That is the level of fear that has been instilled.
Will they pass a resolution? Then I will arrest someone here. Will someone in America criticize me? Then I will torture someone in prison. That is the mindset. It is a model of governance straight out of medieval Mongolia. Compared to this, even Putin appears subtle and elegant,” Datunashvili said.
