I express my readiness to monitor Elene Khoshtaria in order to protect her rights, including her right to health, and, if she agrees, to conduct a visit by a representative of the Office and study/evaluate her medical materials - In February, I wanted to meet with Elene Khoshtaria, but she refused and said that she does not recognize the Public Defender, which is her right - I once again express my readiness to monitor Elene Khoshtaria in order to protect her rights, including her right to health - Public Defender Levan Ioseliani writes about this on social networks.
The Ombudsman responds to the health condition of imprisoned opposition politician Elene Khoshtaria and explains that she is ready to examine the effectiveness of the medical care provided to her in the penitentiary.
“Many people have been interested in what the Public Defender is doing regarding the information spread about the deterioration of the health condition of Elene Khoshtaria. First of all, I would like to state that I have always been ready and am still ready to study the issue of the effectiveness of the medical care provided to her in the penitentiary institution, but since information about a person’s health condition and medical documentation constitute a special category of personal data, the aforementioned documentation can be requested and studied only with the consent of the person himself.
That is why, after the publicly released statement, my representative contacted her lawyer and expressed our readiness to be involved in the process.
I would like to note that even when Elene Khoshtaria was administratively detained in March 2025 and information was publicly released about her alleged ill-treatment at the police station, as well as in the temporary detention center, in particular, the infliction of injuries by police officers and the complete undressing in the isolation room, I publicly responded to the information and stated that I would investigate the alleged ill-treatment of her during her detention.
However, it should be noted that on March 29, in the pre-trial detention center, Elene Khoshtaria refused to meet with a representative of the Public Defender's Office. The Public Defender's representative contacted Elene Khoshtaria even after her release from the center, but she again refused to cooperate with the office.
In addition, in February, I personally visited the Women's Institution No. 5, where, like other prisoners, I met and interviewed the prisoners housed there, including Eliso Kiladze, Mzia Amaglobeli, and Anastasia Zinovkina. I got acquainted with their living conditions, health status, and the situation in terms of the protection of their rights. I also wanted to meet with Elene Khoshtaria, but she refused to meet with me and she stated that she did not recognize the Public Defender, which is her right.
Here, I once again express my readiness to monitor Elene Khoshtaria in order to protect her rights, including the right to health; in case of her consent, a representative of the office will visit her and study/evaluate her medical materials; and to provide the public with objective information, taking into account the requirements for the protection of special categories of personal data," Levan Ioseliani writes on Facebook.
