“It is somewhat difficult for me to understand how, in a country where everyone - including doctors and hospital owners - goes abroad not only for treatment but even for diagnosis, people can be offended by questions about a prisoner’s health and their treatment plan in prison. Elene Khoshtaria does not need any manipulation,” states a message from Mzia Amaghlobeli, founder of Batumelebi and Netgazeti, published by Netgazeti.
According to Amaghlobeli, in prison, “within a confined space, sensitivity to injustice becomes so intense that everything a person needs for life seems insignificant.”
“I did not have a way to contact Imedi TV, so I will say this through Batumelebi/Netgazeti. Hopefully, no one will accuse me of bias.
Jokes aside, it has been a difficult week, a heavy one. Each passing day seems to draw us into an even harsher reality. Nothing is really unexpected anymore, and perhaps I should no longer be upset, but I cannot help it. I cannot calmly accept news of new arrests, violence, indifference, and countless forms of repression.
It is painful to hear that Elene is walking with a cane, or that she has difficulty even holding a pen. It is good that her lawyers drew attention to her health condition.
Here, in this confined space, sensitivity to injustice becomes so acute that everything a person needs to sustain life seems insignificant.
It is somewhat difficult for me to understand how, in a country where everyone - including doctors and hospital owners - travels abroad not only for treatment but even for diagnosis, people can be offended by questions about a prisoner’s health and the treatment plan available in prison conditions. Moreover, Elene is one of those people who does not even demand what she needs here in prison, let alone what she is entitled to receive.
She does not need any manipulations.
Even I know that before her imprisonment, Elene was already relying on painkillers just to remain on her feet. The regime knows better than anyone that her health condition was bound to worsen and become more complicated in prison.
It will be difficult to ignore Elene’s condition, since she is under 24-hour video surveillance.
I do not think Elene needs any encouraging message from anyone, including me, but I still want to tell her that she is not alone. There is a woman within calling distance of her - namely me - who believes as she does and who will fight to the very end, just as she will, for a democratic and European Georgia,” Amaghlobeli wrote.
