Mariam Mekantsishvili, who is charged in connection with the events that took place near the Athoneli Presidential Palace on October 4, used her right to make a final statement before the court, rejecting the charges against her and defending her participation in the protests.

“I am strong and proud that such tremendous solidarity strengthens those of us who have been standing on Rustaveli Avenue for more than 500 days. Even if I am detained today, Your Honor, I stand here very proud, because I did not commit the crime I am accused of and I am not the organizer of any violent group.

I grew up in a very ordinary family. My mother is a teacher, and my father works as a butcher at a market. They are honorable people, and my presence on Rustaveli Avenue is a reflection of the values and dignity they taught me.

I do not regret being there. If we could turn back time, I would be there again. The charges are completely without legal basis. The evidence was obtained unlawfully, recorded secretly, and they have failed to identify any actions that would support the accusations against me.”

Mekantsishvili also questioned the timing of her arrest.

“As for my detention, if I committed a crime and led an organized group, why was I not arrested between October 4 and October 17?

I was arrested through a special operation, as if I were a member of a terrorist organization.”

She further claimed that the purpose of the arrest was to intimidate and humiliate her family.

“The purpose of the arrest was to frighten and humiliate my child. They caused my child psychological trauma. I was arrested in front of my child and made them cry. Do they think they will get away with that? I will hold everyone legally accountable.”

Concluding her statement, Mekantsishvili expressed support for fellow activists.

“I want to wish success to Abo Naveriani and Nana Sanders. Our struggle will certainly end in victory.”

According to the prosecution, Mekantsishvili has been charged under Article 226 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which concerns the organization of group actions. The charges stem from the events that occurred near the Athoneli Presidential Palace on October 4.
