A protest is taking place outside the women’s prison in Rustavi in support of convicted activist Nana Sander.

Participants of the rally are expressing solidarity with Sander, who, according to her own statement, has been “a victim of mistreatment in prison.”

Her friends say the court ruling against her is unjust. Today, they brought protest banners to the prison and demanded her release.

“For me, as her friend, it is very important to know Nana’s health condition. It is important that she remains strong and has basic living conditions, because she is a victim of mistreatment. A very harsh and unjust verdict was delivered against her. I wish her strength and resilience,” one of the participants said.

Politician Teona Chalidze also stated that Nana Sander is the first female emigrant allegedly held “in captivity” by the authorities.

“Nana Sander spent 16 years in emigration and is now in a cell for fighting for Georgia’s European future. We are here to let her know that people outside the prison stand with her. We came to encourage her, support her, and express solidarity. Georgians abroad and those involved in protests will continue to fight for her freedom. We want her voice to be heard even more,” Chalidze said.

For context, Nana Sander was found guilty in connection with the October 4 case and sentenced to 7 years in prison. She was charged under Article 225(1) of the Criminal Code, which concerns organizing group violence, as well as Article 317, which refers to calls for the violent overthrow of Georgia’s constitutional order and state power.
