At the initiative of Tbilisi City Hall, in cooperation with “Georgian Railway,” a technical-economic feasibility study of the city railway corridor is planned. An international tender has been announced for this purpose, - Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze stated at today’s meeting of the capital’s government.

According to him, the expression of interest deadline is set until July 13.

“At the initiative of Tbilisi City Hall, in cooperation with ‘Georgian Railway,’ a technical-economic feasibility study of the city railway corridor is planned. The international tender has been announced in accordance with the Asian Development Bank’s procurement rules, and the deadline for expression of interest ends on July 13.

The project concept is based on Tbilisi’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, which envisages connecting the capital to Mtskheta, Rustavi, Tbilisi International Airport, and the eastern districts using the existing railway infrastructure. This mainly involves the use of existing railway infrastructure, although, if necessary, the construction of new railway sections or bypass lines may also be considered,” the Mayor of Tbilisi stated.

According to Kakha Kaladze, the project aims to conduct a detailed technical-economic study as well as assess environmental, social, and financial aspects.

“The aim of the project is for a qualified consulting company to conduct a detailed technical-economic study that will determine the best alternatives for the development of the city railway corridor in the Tbilisi agglomeration. Environmental, social, and financial aspects will also be assessed. The best candidate among the companies participating in the competition will be selected, and after certain tender procedures, the research works will begin. After that, we will have a full picture regarding the implementation of the project and detailed information on what steps need to be taken in this direction. The project is part of the capital’s transport plan and is being implemented with the financial support of the Asian Development Bank,” Kakha Kaladze noted.

According to him, the Tbilisi City Hall’s Transport and Urban Development Agency will provide technical supervision and coordination of the research process.
