ALDE: While the wider region is reducing Russian influence, the ruling party of Georgia has turned its governance into Russia’s last stronghold and satellite in Eastern Europe

At a two-day conference underway in Vienna, the political group ALDE intends to adopt a resolution concerning Georgia.

According to the draft resolution, which was provided to Interpressnews by the “Droe” party (a member of ALDE’s political family), while the wider region is reducing Russian influence, the ruling party of Georgia has turned its governance into Russia’s last stronghold and satellite in Eastern Europe.

The draft resolution notes that ALDE recognizes the unwavering commitment of the Georgian people to their aspiration to become a member of the European Union.

The draft expresses concern over the recent series of arrests targeting both politicians and protesters. In this context, the resolution mentions doctor Giorgi Chakhunashvili, as well as “Droe” leader Elene Khoshtaria and “Strategy Builder” General Secretary Paata Manjgaladze.

The ALDE draft resolution calls on EU leaders and European states to impose personal sanctions on those responsible for democratic backsliding and serious human rights violations in the country, as well as on the enablers and financing networks of the “Ivanishvili regime.”

At the same time, ALDE recommends maintaining a clear distinction between the regime and the population of Georgia by not suspending visa-free travel for Georgian citizens.

ALDE plans to adopt the resolution on Georgia tomorrow, July 4.
